I am just reading Catch-22 right now! It's been on my reading list forever. It's strange that we all just got around to it this year. Hilarious read.

Rach: We just got the purple cauliflower cause it was pretty and right next to the regular cauliflower.

Jen: Yeah, I don't buy meat that much at home, but I'll occasionally get sausages or make chili or something. (I don't know if I could love someone who doesn't love steak though!)

Sara: It's not that hard. Curry's basically just stew with more spices; I generally follow recipes pretty carefully, because some spices go in at the beginning and some go in at the end and the procedure's not really instinctive for me.

Kev: This is sooo not a permanent change. Just like, a meat break. I eat veggie most of the time already (and I do get a decent amount of milk and eggs and stuff), and I probably will still maybe eat fish, by which I mainly mean sushi.

Jaya: Yeah, that's what one of my cookbooks said. It also claimed that the little split lentils would cook in about half an hour, but it took way longer and we had to cook it down at the end because there was too much water. I am still dal challenged. I am learning! (One reason I am trying full-on no meat as opposed the 75% no meat is so I can just have meat on special occasions, in which case I can afford to choose organic, grain-fed meat as opposed to factory-farmed meat which they feed really gross things to.)

My fav dal is arhar dal (Im not sure what its called in English) but you cant really cook it unless you have a pressure cooker. If you boil it in a pot itll prolly take half a day to cook. If you can master pressure cooker technology you can fully cook dals in about 15 minutes, thats how everybody cooks in back in India. And aloo gobhi with purple cauliflower? Bizzaro!

Im all about the veggie food! Indian veggie food bcuz thats how I was raised I guess. Of course I still eat meat but mostly when eating out (like Jen). All this talk of cloned meat freaks me out though and I want to eliminate it entirely if possible...

Veggieism really doesn't work for some people. Just be sure you're getting enough dairy and eggs occasionally for B12's sake.

Also, with scratch curries, always bay leaves. Usually with lentils, I'll cheat and strain them... they're unsticky, so it's pretty easy.

i'm scared to actually cook indian from scratch, i feel i'd fuck it up big time. for us it's just califlower, chicken, onions and pataks curry from a can...it does taste good though.

The best part about vegetarian cooking is that it's cheaper than non-vegetarian cooking, cause meat is expensive. I used to live with a vegetarian boy (I should have known better, how can you love someone who doesn't love steak??), so I'm pretty good with the veggie dishes. I always eat vegetarian at home, and order meat when I'm dining out.

Christmas baking inspired me as well... I should bake more often.

You'll excuse me for saying that the purple cauliflower looks mildly disturbing, and/or like something Queen's engineers would make for, like, homecoming or somesuch.
