3 TV-related Things
- Heh. Tim Kring and I agree with what was wrong with Heroes this year on every single point. I have been still watching because I am still pretty sure there is a paper in it, and because I was pretty sure that things would eventually start happening again. Last year had the same slow build, just not this slow. (And they did get better now that it’s sweeps month! This week was really exciting and I totally called the identity of Adam Monroe a whole 15 before they revealed it.) (via TWOP)
- Also, can we talk about Roseanne? They have been running it on CMT at 7 and 10, between Hope & Faith and Married With Children. The difference is not just that Roseanne is a good show and I have no idea why someone would want to relive any other part of CMT’s “comedy block.” I remember watching Roseanne when I was a kid, but I don’t think I ever got how truly deeply awesome it was. A few weeks ago, this episode, “The Getaway, Almost” ran. Roseanne and Jackie go all Thelma and Louise after they pick up a riot grrl (played by Jenna Elfman, of all people). I still remember Roseanne and sexist pop lyrics:
Remember “Baby Baby Don’t get hooked on Me? I’ll just use you then I’ll set you free?” – Use me and I’ll set you on FIRE you bastard!
Roseanne (to Jackie): Remember “Take a Letter, Maria?”
Jackie: Oh… I love that song…
Roseanne: You do not love that, Jackie. Ever listen to those words? It’s about this guy who screws up his secretary, and she still has to take his stinkin’ letters to his wife! She’s getting screwed twice!
Remember the song “Run for your life”? He said he’d rather see her dead, than to be with another guy. That’s all them wifebeaters need is an anthem.
Then they run an asshole trucker off the road.
The whole world is pretty agreed that the show went downhill in the last season after the Connors win the lottery and working class realism totally disappears, but I kind of think it’s great, in an “our show is ending and we don’t need to make sense anymore” kind of way. Roseambo?!
Come on! What’s not to love? Roseanne turns into an action hero and fights ethnic stereotype terrorists who hate women. She shoots one guy in the face with tampons and tells him “Now you can ride horses and swim!” Okay, maybe it’s just funny to me because I like tampon-based comedy. Still, Roseanne is awesome: it’s TV about a working-class family and
3. The office has shut down production; Steve Carell won’t cross the picket line.
Man, it is unsurprising that Hollywood’s corporate ownership has been able to adapt their distribution models to match people’s actual viewing habits, but they have not actually thought to, I don’t know, modify the workers’ pay to reflect that model.
